We only had 200 miles to ride today, so we thought it would be no big deal after riding 530 on Wednesday. Back on I 10 about 9:30 in the morning for what should have been less than a 4 hour trip. We went under the tunnel at Mobile bay... Debbie seems to dread these less than when we started our ride last year. Later we crossed the temporary span of the I 10 bridge washed out by Katrina in 2005, maybe by next year they will have finished the new one. Then somewhere in Mississippi, we found the rain we had ridden through yesterday, except this time it was constant for the rest of the day.... and much harder. After a few stops to wait it out and a trip to Wendy's we tried to make it to New Orleans, but were once again forced to pull off the highway. I found a convenience store that was dry, but didn't realize the water was a foot deep near the entrance until we were already there. We made it, but were stranded there for an hour until the rain slowed and the water went back down some. The picture says it all.
Finally made it to the hotel near the French Qtr, Debbie found that everything in her luggage was wet, so now it was my turn to spend some time in the laundry drying clothes. Fortunately I got the dryer just before the trainer for the girls basketball team showed up to wash uniforms.
Somehow about the time we arrived the rain stopped for the day, we took some time to walk around town, Cafe' Mondo, Jackson Sqr, Bourbon Street for dinner and then stopped to listen to some music for a while where we were invited to join an interesting group of locals.
Weather Channel does not promise better conditions for Friday, but if we ever get to Vegas it looks great.
